You can choose between digital I/O cards, analog I/O cards, or specialized cards for specific tasks such as motion control or temperature regulation. Digital I/O cards are typically used to handle binary signals (ON/OFF, TRUE/FALSE). They are suitable where the system needs to interpret simple signals like switches, relays, limit switches, and safety devices.

The control of data that expresses in continuous ranges of values like temperature, pressure or speed, normally requires analog I/O cards. They are more precise and allow for fine-tuned adjustments.

As for embedded I/O cards, they are compact, dedicated expansion boards that can be integrated into custom embedded systems, allowing them to interact with the physical world (the system’s operative devices). They can be designed to handle both analog and digital signals, and are often designed for specific tasks.

Note that I/O cards and I/O modules are almost equivalent in purpose and function. The main differences between them are that I/O modules are generally bigger than cards, are often installed on I/O racks or bases, and are generally connected to PLC systems while I/O cards are typically integrated to industrial PCs and embedded controllers.
