Definition of Variable Speed Drives
A Variable Speed Drive (VSD) or Adjustable Speed Drive (ASD) is an electronic device that belongs to the category of pre-actuators. This means they come right before actuators like motors in the chain of automation products, as they are primarily in charge of regulating the motor’s speed, torque and direction.
How they regulate motor speed and improve efficiency
Control of the motor’s speed and efficiency is achieved by adjusting the frequency and voltage sent to the motor. For this reason, VSDs can also be called Variable Frequency Drives (VFD).
Benefits of Using Variable Speed Drives
Precise speed control for industrial processes
This precise control of motor speed is especially crucial in industrial environments. Variable speed drives are needed in applications such as conveyors, centrifuges, or to control robot motors in factories. VSDs also control the speed of motors in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, improving efficiency, commonly referred to as HVAC applications.
Reduced energy consumption and costs
Variable speed drives reduce energy consumption by adjusting the motor speed or frequency according to the actual demand, avoiding energy waste associated with motors running at full speed all the time. Over time, this also leads to considerable energy savings, which means lower energy costs for your maintenance department.
Improved motor lifespan and performance
This more intelligent control of engine speed helps protect the engine from wear and tear. Avoiding abrupt starts or stops of the motor and constant running at full-speed reduces mechanical stress, therefore extending the life of both the motor and associated machinery. The motor lasts and performs longer. Like servo motors, some drives incorporate closed-loop control mechanisms that allow them to provide feedback on the motor’s performance to the control system.
Last but not least, VSDs indirectly contribute to enhancing human comfort in industrial environments: a more efficient motor is also a quieter one. Motor speed and torque control positively impact the noise on site
